Creativity, joy, movement, exploring new concepts, and student voice are at the heart of Burley’s music program. Music at Burley is simultaneously a time for rigorous academic study and a place to explore personal interests while finding joy in creating, performing, and collaborating with peers. Whether writing and performing original songs, choreographing dances and composing music to reflect the meaning of literary works, or simply learning to perform and sing together, students will get to experience the joy of music through a multitude of modalities during their time at Burley.

Key Features of our Music Program

Primary Music K-2

Moments of play interspersed with learning to sing, dance, move to a steady beat, and play pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments. Students make connections between music and literature learning to read and write basic iconic notation.

Intermediate Music 3-5

Intermediate Music focuses on reading and writing music while making deeper connections to other school subjects. Students learn to play the recorder, the ukulele, and a range of other instruments. They compose and write lyrics for original music through digital audio workstations (like Garageband).

Middle School Music 6-8

Students in Middle School Music continue with band or general music/choir track. Middle school choir students sing in general music and receive in-depth choral instruction after school. 6th band meets weekly for rehearsal and participates in small groups, differentiated instruction by instrument grouping or ability level. 7th and 8th band path students have small group instrument lessons as well as after school and morning rehearsals.
